Process And Advantages of Galvanized Steel Pipes

Oct. 14, 2021

Metal corrosion is a big problem for every construction project, which makes the choice of sustainable materials and contactors an important task for every construction company. One of the most environmentally friendly finishing processes that can be used to prevent corrosion, galvanising, is the key to the problem. Galvanized steel pipes produce the least amount of waste and ensures that buildings and projects are as sustainable as possible. BONA shows you the processes and advantages of galvanised steel.

What is galvanising?

Galvanising is the process of applying zinc to various metals to form a protective coating that prevents corrosion and rusting. As the zinc dries, it becomes a sacrificial coating that protects the metal beneath from imperfections. There are several different processes for galvanising metals, but hot dip galvanising and electro galvanising are the most common methods of galvanising.

Hot-dip galvanising

Typically, the manufacturer will dip the metal into a tank of molten zinc that is kept at a temperature of around 860°F. When the metal is removed from the tank, the pure zinc is mixed with oxygen to form zinc oxide. This mixture then further reacts with carbon dioxide and forms a final coating on the material, known as zinc carbonate.

Electroplating zinc

Electro-galvanising may not be as common as the above methods, but it is one of the most unique. In complete contrast to hot dip galvanising, electro-galvanising does not involve a dipping process or any molten zinc bath. Instead, the manufacturer will introduce an electric current into the electrolyte solution applied to the steel. This process reduces the positively charged zinc ions to zinc metal, which is then deposited on the positively charged steel.

Advantages of galvanised pipe fittings

Low cost

Compared to most treated steel, galvanised steel pipes are easier to use after delivery. No additional preparation, inspection or treatment of the surface is required. As a result, you pay no additional costs other than the cost of galvanised steel.

Galvanised steel requires less maintenance than other untreated steels, but still maintains its good condition and appearance.

Longer service life

Galvanised steel has a longer service life than most steels with different protective treatments and is believed to last approximately 50 years in an average environment. In harsh and water-exposed conditions, galvanised steel can still withstand up to 20 years without any maintenance.

Rust protection

The zinc acts as a protective coating, preventing the steel beneath from being exposed to moisture in oxygen. As a result, there is no chance of oxidation occurring and iron is not converted into iron oxide.

How to choose

There is no doubt that galvanised steel is a good choice for your project, thanks to its fantastic advantages. The question now is how to choose a quality galvanised steel component.

First of all, you should choose galvanised steel from a plant with high production capacity. This can be easily identified by their production facilities (e.g. factories, warehouses, production lines). Secondly, the product should comply with international standards that are widely applicable to similar products. In this case, the galvanised steel you are considering should comply with ASTM, JIS or AS/NZ.
